Chip White's Ensemble back @ Jazz Tuesdays, in NY, March 8

Join us as we welcome back the Chip White Ensemble with Patience Higgins (reeds), Waldron Ricks (trumpet & fluegelhorn), Sam Burtis (trombone -- oh boy, that solo on Deodato's "Havana Strut"!), Cecilia Coleman (piano), Tim Givens (bass) &, of course, Chip White (drums) on Tuesday, March 8 at Jazz Tuesdays in the John Birks Gillespie Auditorium in the New York City Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway). There will be 2 shows: 8:00 and 9:30 p.m. Please call 212-222-5159 for reservations and information.

Jazz drummer Alan “Chip” White has performed and/or recorded with a variety of artists, including Carmen McRae, Jaki Byard, Candido, John Abercrombie, Frank Wess, Claudio Roditi, James Moody, Tom Waits, Jimmy McGriff, Mulgrew Miller, Gary Bartz, John Hicks, Houston Person and Etta Jones, and many more. He has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. In 1990, Mr. White co-wrote and produced the jazz musical "Manhattan Moments" with choreographer Kathy Sanson.

On "Harlem Sunset," his first CD as leader and composer, the visionary drummer/composer brought together an exciting and talented group of musicians — saxophonist Gary Bartz, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist Steve Nelson, NY-based Brazilian top trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and bassist Buster Williams, along with Mr. White, on energetic and enthusiastic renditions of original compositions as well as standards.

Chip's second CD, "Music and Lyrics," was released in 2005. He wrote, arranged, and produced all the compositions on this recording, which features the wonderful voice of Gail Allen and the lush tenor saxophone sound of the underrated Houston Person, along with pianist Lafayette Harris and bassist George Kaye.

Then came “Double Dedication”, a two-CD set, features 13 original compositions honoring jazz masters on one CD, and the other contains his poems for each of these artists (from his book, "I'm Just the Drummer in the Band") with the music sequenced underneath. The band includes Wycliffe Gordon, Randy Brecker, Steve Wilson, Kenny Barron, Ray Drummond, and vocalist Gail Allen.

Chip’s latest CD, “More Dedications” will be available at this performance. It is volume 2 in the Dedications series and is also a two-CD set, with 9 original compositions honoring jazz masters on one CD and poems for the same musicians on the second CD. It received a four-star rating in the November 2010 issue of Downbeat and Chip was interviewed in the July 2010 issue of JazzInsideNY (available online). The band includes Steve Nelson, Wycliffe Gordon, Duane Eubanks, Patience Higgins, Mulgrew Miller, and Peter Washington.
